ISO 45001 replaces OHSAS 18001 as the new standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems

ISO 45001 replaces OHSAS 18001 as the new standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems

Every day, thousands of lives are lost due to work accidents or fatal diseases connected to work activities. Latest estimates from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) show that, each day, more than 7,600 people die as a result of work-related activities (that’s over 2.78 million a year), and over 370 million accidents occur on the job annually.  Aside from the tragic loss of life, the burden to employers and the wider economy from early retirements, staff absence and rising insurance premiums is very apparent.

The new standard, introduced on 12th March 2018, has been developed by H&S experts over 4.5 years to provide a framework to help organisations continually improve occupational health and safety (OH&S), to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks and create better, safer working conditions, all over the world.

ISO 45001 is a Game-Changer

Applicable in all parts of the world and across all sectors, ISO 45001 is the first global standard of its kind intended to reduce these terrible statistics.

The standard will follow in the footsteps of ISO’s other management systems approaches, such as ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 9001 (quality).

Benefits of ISO 45001

A key benefit of the new standard is that it should integrate readily with other ISO management systems in your business. Helping streamline processes and delivering efficiencies saving time and money. The standard should increase implementation of proactive risk prevention measures and strengthen legal and regulatory compliance whilst reducing business losses.

Certification and Migration

If you’re currently certified to OHSAS 18001 then you will need to migrate to ISO 45001 as OHSAS 18001 will be withdrawn over a 3 year migration period. However, it is worth remembering  organisations of any size can use the standard without going for certification as it’s all a positive step in the right direction.

For ease of migration to ISO 45001 or if you are new to safety management systems entirely, Safety Cloud compliance software automates every aspect of H&S management. Quick to implement and built around your business, discover how Safety Cloud can work for your business.
